Futuristic sport drone soccer likened to 'robotic Quidditch'

On Wednesday, the UK hosted its first ever Drone Soccer tournament at Wigston Academy in Leicestershire. This unique event combines the sport of football and drone technology, which is encased in a protective ball-shaped cage. The concept of Drone Soccer originated in South Korea.

The tournament was organized by Drone Sports Ltd, and according to one of the organization’s representatives, this extraordinary sport has an enticingly futuristic tone to it. One of the players, Oscar, aged 12, expressed that the game isn’t a pushover, adding that he got three goals in three minutes. He is also quoted to have said, “There’s nothing like this and it’s really fun”.

Although this was the first time this sort of event was being held in the UK, it has been played in other countries before. The rules of the game are the same as football, with teams trying to score goals against the opposition while flying their drones through the air. While it may seem odd, this sport is quickly gaining popularity across the world.

The potential of Drone soccer is clear, and it’s no secret that it has an appeal to the younger generation. Combining technology and sport into one can only increase interest and competition in both areas. The tournament at Wigston Academy was a great success and as Drone Sports Ltd have confirmed, we can expect many more events of this nature throughout the UK and possibly across the world
