Labour MPs Jeevun Sandher and Louise Jones have announced their engagement to the House of Commons. Sandher proposed to Jones at her home a few days prior, two years after meeting during their campaigning days. Despite winning the Loughborough and North East Derbyshire constituencies respectively, the distance between them has not been an obstacle for the couple.
Sandher and Jones’ shared understanding of the demands of their shared careers has been a staple of their relationship. Sandher explains how, “If Louise was to say to me ‘oh, look, we have to cut these plans because of this reason,’ I would completely understand – and vice versa.” Combining forces has also made Sandher’s job easier, as Jones is better than he is in parliament’s learning ropes. Sandher has also explained that they have both been able to ask things of each other, no matter how small, from filling in “this admin form” to the big stuff.
The couple first met during a debate while campaigning for their respective council positions in the same constituency. Sandher realised by October 2023 that the happiest times in his life were spent with her, leading to their romance blossoming. The couple won their positions as first-time MPs in July. They have both spent much of the first week telling family and friends of their engagement, but the Commons announcement revealed it to colleagues and constituents, leading to a flood of positive support.
Sandher and Jones are not the first married couple in the House of Commons, however. These couples include Home Secretary Yvette Cooper in Gordon Brown’s cabinet with Education Secretary Ed Balls, as well as former health secretary Baroness Virginia Bottomley, and her husband Sir Peter Bottomley who both served as Conservative MPs. Touching on the subject matter, Sandher has joked, “we’re going to have to ask them how they how they did it and what worked and what did not… So, Ed Balls – give me a call.” The couple must balance their parliamentary duties with their wedding planning now, and Sandher said, “if anyone wants to plan a wedding, please do get in touch… we’ll make them together and we’ll come to the right thing for both of us.”
