Netflix Senna drama's Norfolk 'Alps' mocked on social media

The new Netflix series about the life of Formula 1 driver Ayrton Senna has been causing a stir on social media because of its portrayal of snow-capped mountains in the famously flat county of Norfolk. Viewers spotted a range of rugged peaks beyond Snetterton, and the circuit responded with a Facebook post saying that it was “pretty accurate” because the “monumental, Himalaya-rivalling peaks of Old Buckenham are frequently visible on a clear day”. The post has been shared more than 3,000 times, and many users have seen the funny side. “That’s my next skiing holiday sorted,” said one.

The Norfolk circuit where Senna honed his craft in the early 1980s was used in the filming of Ron Howard’s 2013 film Rush, which also relied on Snetterton to double for some of the most historic tracks in the world. Similarly, it is not known where the Snetterton scenes in Senna were filmed, but a track in Buenos Aires, Argentina, was used for some of the racing shots.

The Brazilian racing driver won 41 Grand Prix across 11 seasons, and the Netflix series focuses on his early career right up to his death in the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix, aged 34. In the early 1980s, Senna lived in a bungalow in Eaton on the edge of Norwich while driving for Ralph Firman’s Van Diemen company at Snetterton, before moving on to Team Lotus.

Snetterton confirmed that it had no involvement in the filming of Senna. Netflix has declined to comment
