A “significant” blaze that started at a factory has now spread to nearby buildings on an industrial estate near Livingston, West Lothian. Firefighters were called to the Brucefield Industrial Estate, Bellsquarry, after 1:30 pm on Saturday. Nine appliances are presently trying to extinguish the fire which has taken hold of a large factory alongside other adjoining buildings. However, there are no reports of any injuries.
Residents living close by have been asked by the police to keep their windows and doors closed. Firefighters are yet to extinguish the fire over 24 hours later, with the smoke that could still be seen from miles away making it difficult for residents. A spokesperson from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service stated that their officers would remain on the scene handling the fire for the next few days. Moreover, with the possibility of strong winds this week, residents are being warned that they need to keep their windows and doors closed this week and avoid the area.
A statement recently issued by West Lothian Council said that Environment Protection Officers were being sent to the area to assess and monitor air quality. Reports suggest that 50 firefighters are currently on the scene attempting to put out the fire. No damage has yet been reported, but locals have been advised to stay away from the area. After the incident, emergency services have released a series of warnings to residents, urging to close doors and windows due to the smoke produced by the fire
