Storm Darragh: UK to be battered by rain, winds as amber warnings issued

The UK is expected to experience powerful winds as Storm Darragh approaches. A yellow severe weather warning has been put in place by the Met Office for large parts of the UK from 3:00 pm GMT from Friday onwards. This will not include the northern regions of Scotland. Some areas, including Southern Scotland, Northern Ireland, as well as some locations in western parts of England and Wales, have received amber weather warnings. This indicates that there could be harm to buildings and transport disruption as well as power outages with winds reaching gusts of up to 80 mph (129 km/h).

While heavy rainfall is predicted, it is unlikely that flooding and as much rainfall as seen with Storm Bert will occur. Darragh is the fourth identified storm this season and has emerged only weeks after the occurrence of Storm Bert and Conall which caused disruption towards the end of November.

Heavy rain and forceful winds started affecting the west of the United Kingdom later on Friday as low pressure developed, with the winds strengthening. Darragh is expected to move over northern England by Saturday with its centre, leading to a warning on strong winds as well as amber warnings in the Northern Irish, south-west and western England and Welsh regions.

Coastal areas may experience gusts of 70-80 mph (113-129 km/h) while inland regions may report gusts of 60 -70 mph (96-113 km/h). These powerful winds may lead to building damage and transportation problems, particularly to the ferries in the Irish Sea. There is also a yellow warning about wind covering the entire UK, from 3:00 pm GMT onwards on Friday until Sunday early morning as Darragh continues through the North Sea. This may lead to up to 40-50 mph (64-80 km/h) gusts, which could cause transportation issues.

Although floods are a possibility, concerns about heavy downpour and Storm Bert do not apply to Darragh; up to 2-3 inches (50-60 mm) of rainfall is expected in some areas of Wales, central, and southern Scotland by Saturday morning, resulting in a yellow Met Office rain warning for these areas. In the rest of the UK, rainfall totals are anticipated to be one inch (25mm). Finally, there will be substantial snow on the higher grounds of Scotland for some time as Darragh approaches
