Hongchi Xiao, an alternative healer, has been sentenced to 10 years in jail for the manslaughter of 71-year-old diabetic woman, Danielle Carr-Gomm. She died after stopping her insulin during a natural healing retreat hosted by Xiao in Wiltshire in October 2016. The Paida Lajin therapy event in which Carr-Gomm was participating at the time involved patients using slapping therapy.

Mr Justice Bright sentenced Xiao for manslaughter by gross negligence after he apparently failed to seek medical help for Carr-Gomm during the event. Xiao was also given a five-year extended licence.
Following the sentencing, Carr-Gomm’s son, Matthew, commented on how his mother was “desperate to try and cure herself of the disease”. He added that “She always maintained a healthy lifestyle and was adamant that nothing would stop her from living a full life.
