Yvonne Fletcher: Fraud arrest over campaign to find PC's killer

A 69-year-old man has been arrested in north London over alleged fraud in connection with a campaign to find the perpetrator of a 1984 shooting of a police officer. Yvonne Fletcher was 25 years old when she was shot while on duty outside the Libyan embassy in London. No one has ever been charged in connection to her death. The Metropolitan Police received allegations of financial irregularities in relation to a justice campaign and asked Cheshire Police to investigate the issue in order to avoid potential conflicts of interests.

Officers are currently searching a property in Mill Hill and the arrested man is being questioned in police custody. However, Detective Constable Ed Currie has emphasised that the investigation is not linked to PC Fletcher’s family, who will be kept up-to-date on the case, or the official police memorial trust charity. He added that the police force would like to hear from anyone who may have donated to the campaign at any point.

The killing of PC Fletcher, who was policing a demonstration outside the Libyan embassy, has long been a prominent and controversial case. Diplomatic relations with Libya were strained as a result, as it was widely believed that embassy staff may have been involved in the killing. In 1999, Libyan intelligence officer Abdulqadir al-Baghdadi was identified as the prime suspect, but attempts to extradite him were rebuffed by then-leader Muammar Gaddafi. Al-Baghdadi died in 2012 in what was reported to have been a suspicious road accident in Libya.

Despite investigations and inquiries into the case over the years, no one has been brought to justice for the killing. The arrest of the 69-year-old man on suspicion of fraud may be unlikely to bring new information to light on PC Fletcher’s death
