A mother who lost her teenage daughter to domestic violence is warning that more lives will be lost unless action is taken to address the issue. Micala Trussler voiced her concerns after a study commissioned by the Youth Endowment Fund (YEF) revealed that 49% of teenagers in relationships in England and Wales had experienced violent or controlling behaviour from their partner. Speaking about the findings, Jess Phillips, minister for safeguarding and violence against women and girls, called them “heartbreaking and deeply concerning”.
The study, which questioned over 10,000 children between the ages of 13 and 17, revealed that just under half the respondents in a relationship during the past year had suffered controlling behaviours, such as monitoring of their phones. Just under one-third said they had experienced physical or sexual violence, and 20% of those surveyed felt coerced or pressured into sexual activity without their consent. The results of the study also revealed a higher percentage of teenage boys admitted to experiencing violent or controlling behaviours, 57%, compared to 41% for girls.
The YEF survey did not indicate reasons as to why the teenagers had experienced violent and controlling behaviour, but the charity’s CEO, Jonathan Yates, cited the potential impact of social media, arguing that one-third of all teenage children had seen online promotion of violence against women and girls. Sightings of such material underscored the requirement for “high-quality content in schools about spotting the signs of violence in relationships” to be made readily available and taught by trained individuals, according to Yates.
While 76% of students received education in dating and relationships during the past year, only 40% had received lessons about being in healthy and respectful relationships. Responding to the survey, Phillips emphasised the government’s commitment to reducing instances of violence against women and girls over the course of the next decade, stating that the subject of respectful and healthy relationships and consent would be covered within ongoing educational programs
