Merthyr Tydfil sinkhole: Wall falls into hole mid-interview

A resident of Nant Morlais, Merthyr Tydfil was being interviewed nearby when a section of garden wall collapsed into a sinkhole. The incident occurred over the weekend with cameras capturing the moment the wall disappeared into the hole which appeared on the driveway of a bungalow. According to estimates, the hole is 30-40ft (9-12m) deep and five meters (16ft) wide. It swallowed up part of the pavement and road, and about 30 homes had to be evacuated. One local resident described the situation as “very scary”.

The incident was caught on camera by cameraman Matt Murray and edited by Erin Lister. The video shows the affected area with the hole which was visible in the middle of the road. Even pedestrians were urged to avoid the area, and the police were stationed to prevent traffic. The sinkhole is believed to have been caused by a water leak, which softened the ground underneath the road, causing the surface to collapse. Local council workers are said to be working urgently to inspect the area and address the problem.

New updates also reveal that the cause of the sinkhole may have been due to the abandoned mines underlying the bungalow. Experts say the incident could have been much worse if it wasn’t for the quick thinking of emergency services. The police department immediately evacuated the residents and sealed off the area to prevent further damage. Officers are currently working to investigate the matter further to make recommendations to the local authorities on how to prevent future sinkholes in the area.

Many locals were forced to uproot their lives and move temporarily to hotels to ensure their safety and continued well-being. Some residents are hoping to have a dialogue with the local authorities to discuss the safety of their community and their future accommodations. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and no fatalities occurred
