Major war could destroy UK army in six months – minister Alistair Carns

The British Army could be completely destroyed in just six months if it were to fight a war on the scale of the conflict in the Ukraine, warns a Defence Minister. Alistair Carns advocates the need to quickly generate mass armies in the event of a crisis to avoid escalation to violence between nations and exposure of military personnel to injury or death. Carns warns that the Russian losses incurred currently in Ukraine of around 1,500 soldiers wounded, killed or missing demonstrate the attritional nature of such conflicts. If the British Army experienced similar casualty numbers, it would be “expended” within 6-12 months in coalition with other countries if intervening in a similar conflict.

Carns, a British army reservist and former Royal Marines colonel, believes that the reserves are essential for the creation of mass armies as the reserves provide  the capability to seamlessly merge specialist skills into the armed forces on a large scale.  The Ministry of Defence has 109,245 military personnel, including 25,814 volunteer reservists. Thus, he advocates not for a larger army, but for the need to be able to generate mass rapidly in the event of a crisis.

Last month, the Deputy Chief of the Defence Staff Lieutenant General Sir Rob Magowan spoke to the Defence Select Committee regarding Russian insecurity, stating that the British Army was ready to mobilise immediately to challenge an invasion of Eastern Europe by Russian forces.

British Prime Minister, Theresa May, is urging Nato European allies to increase defence spending in order to ‘meet the tremendous security challenges that we are facing at this time’. It was emphasised that, whilst a larger army was not required, a “depth and mass” of soldiers was necessary to ensure national security through the integration of specialist skills.
