Lucy Letby, a former neonatal nurse who was previously convicted for murdering seven infants and attempting to murder seven others at the Countess of Chester Hospital in 2015-16, has been questioned over more deaths at two hospitals, Cheshire Constabulary has confirmed. The police have spoken to Letby at the jail where she is serving her sentence and are investigating non-fatal collapses and deaths at the Countess of Chester Hospital and Liverpool Women’s Hospital. It is understood Letby has not been interviewed over the deaths at Liverpool hospital previously. Letby worked at Liverpool Women’s Hospital 30 shifts on two placements from 2012 to 2015.
In October, a documentary by BBC Panorama revealed that potentially life-threatening incidents occurred on almost a third of Letby’s shifts in Liverpool in one November 2012 case, where a baby boy collapsed and water was later found in his breathing tube. The notes confirmed that the nurse looking after him was Letby. The programme also saw evidence that may have indicated a baby boy was poisoned with insulin while in her care at the Countess of Chester Hospital.
Detectives are examining Letby’s entire career and they are reviewing over 4,000 admissions of babies into neonatal units where she was present. The new investigation comes as the case and the implications for the NHS is currently being examined at the Thirlwall Inquiry. There has been significant debate over the science used in the case against Letby, and several experts have challenged the medical evidence used to convict her.
Letby’s new legal team plans to take her case to the Criminal Cases Review Commission next year to re-apply for it to be sent back to the Court of Appeal. She has already lost several appeals against her convictions. The Thirwall Inquiry has heard from the hospital’s bosses in recent days, some of whom are speaking publicly about the case for the first time. Sir Duncan Nichol, former chairman, told the inquiry that his decision to not invite the doctors who suspected her to an important meeting was “a big personal failure”. More information on Letby’s recent interview will be released “at the appropriate time
