Welsh Conservative Andrew RT Davies faces MS vote on leadership

Andrew RT Davies, the leader of the Conservative Party in the Welsh Parliament, is facing a vote of no confidence. Tory MPs had met Davies in his office in Cardiff Bay last Thursday, and party sources confirmed that there would be a vote of confidence. However, none of the 15 MPs led by Davies have called for him to leave his position. Davies has faced criticism over his comments this year regarding halal meat in schools and for asking people at an agricultural show whether they thought the Welsh Parliament should be abolished.

The Conservative Party is the biggest opposition party to the Labour Welsh government, but a recent poll suggests that declining support has left them in fourth place behind Labour, Plaid Cymru, and Reform ahead of the 2026 Welsh Parliament election. The party lost all its MPs in Wales during this year’s general election.

Davies was originally selected as Conservative Welsh leader by the party in 2011 but was forced out in 2018 before being reappointed in 2021. There has been an ongoing debate about the status of the Welsh leader, with repeated calls for that person to be recognized as the party’s official leader in Wales.

Former Downing Street spin doctor Guto Harri has criticized Davies over his leadership, saying on Monday that Davies should “look in the mirror and consider whether somebody else could do a better job.” It remains to be seen whether Davies will survive the vote of no confidence
