Warren Stephens, the CEO of private investment bank Stephens Inc, has been nominated by President-elect Donald Trump to become the US ambassador to the United Kingdom. In a statement posted on Truth Social, Trump said that Stephens “has always dreamed of serving the United States full time”. Trump insisted that he was eager to see Stephens serve as a top diplomat, representing the USA to one of its most valuable allies.
Stephens has a strong connection with Trump, he contributed millions of dollars to Trump’s re-election campaign in 2020. Stephens was not always a supporter of Trump’s candidacy however, with reports in 2016 suggesting he donated around $4m to political groups seeking to bar Trump from rising. Stephens also contributed over $2m to a political action committee supporting former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley’s unsuccessful candidacy in 2024. But following Trump’s success, Stephens threw his support behind him.
In his statement, Stephens honoured the nomination saying “I have expressed to President Trump that I would be extremely proud to serve our country and his administration, working to implement the President’s agenda and further strengthen the long-standing alliance between the United States and the United Kingdom. He and his wife also head the Harriet and Warren Stephens Family Foundation, which has supported a range of philanthropic causes, including the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts, the University of Mississippi, and the Episcopal Collegiate School in Little Rock
