TikTok Awards: ‘Roll your eyes if you want, I'm a star' says nominee

TikTok is set to host its first-ever UK and Ireland awards show and will honour some of its most popular creators across 12 categories. Over 101 million people follow the 72 finalists on TikTok, and the winners will be announced at a prestigious ceremony in London on Tuesday evening. There is a lot of effort that goes into content creation, and an award ceremony like this can inspire more people to create content, a belief supported by Jade Beaty and Ryan Losasso, who create travel content on TikTok. The awards will honour a diverse range of creators from science experts to literature lovers, and the ceremony will recognise upcoming nominees.

TikTok has a massive following of 175 million monthly active users in Europe. Its videos have contributed to some of this year’s most viral trends, from demure and mindful to brain rot. Videos on TikTok have played a significant role in the rise of these trends. Psychologist and Oxford University Professor Andrew Przybylski describes a growing global dissatisfaction, which can be labelled “brain rot”. It refers to the over-consumption of low-quality content on social media, which translates to mindlessly scrolling through apps like TikTok.

Ayamé Ponder is one of the nominees for creator of the year. Her 3.8 million followers might know her best for comedy sketches, but she is now using her platform to give back. She began to shift her purpose when she saw the injustices happening around the world. Critics say influencers generally get a bad rep, but Ponder thinks differently. She insists that she is a star, and her followers would agree with her.

The UK awards ceremony is one of 20 to be held globally this year, and it shows how much this social media platform has grown. It may look like a simple social media app, but it has proved to be a powerful tool for many people. TikTok communities have brought a lot of change in many areas, from the way we cook, to learn and even read; it is significant and deserves recognition. Melissa McFarlane, head of operations for TikTok UK, Ireland & Nordics, said: “Their contribution goes well beyond just ‘influence.'” The nominations at the awards include people who create “get ready with me” content, day-in-the-life pieces, and many others who have carved out a specific niche. For example, some nominees include those who share fascinating insights about historical events, like Dr Amy Boyington, and pages dedicated to fossils, like yorkshire.fossils
