Haverfordwest paddleboard deaths: Ex-police officer in court

A woman from Port Talbot has appeared in court charged with gross negligence manslaughter, following the death of four people in a Pembrokeshire river three years ago. Nerys Bethan Lloyd, 39, a former police officer and the ex-owner of a paddleboard tour company, was released on unconditional bail and is due to appear at Swansea Crown Court on 3 January.

The incident took place in the River Cleddau in Haverfordwest in 2018, resulting in the deaths of Paul O’Dwyer, Andrea Powell, Morgan Rogers and Nicola Wheatley. District Judge Mark Layton ruled that Haverfordwest Magistrates’ Court was not equipped to handle the case because of the seriousness of the charges.

In addition to the gross negligence manslaughter charge, Ms Lloyd has also been charged with one offence under the Health and Safety at Work Act. She was the former owner of Salty Dog, the company operating the paddleboard tour.

The incident saw four paddleboarders lose their lives. Paul O’Dwyer, 42, hailed from Port Talbot, while Morgan Rogers, 24, was from Merthyr Tydfil. Nicola Wheatley, 40, came from Pontarddulais, while Andrea Powell, 41, was from Bridgend. Powell died a week after the incident in hospital
