British indie band Sports Team have been robbed at gunpoint in Vallejo, California. The incident took place on the first day of their US tour, ahead of their opening show in nearby Sacramento. In addition to their passports, stage equipment, and personal belongings, one thief looted the group’s tour van. Footage shared with the BBC shows the robber brandishing a gun at the group’s tour manager as she approached the van. The band were at a Starbucks for breakfast and were alerted to the ongoing robbery by a passerby who warned that someone was robbing their white Sprinter van.
The band, best known for championing energetic riffs and dry humor, have scored two top 10 albums in the UK. They stopped at the Starbucks café for breakfast when they were informed about the robbery in progress. Drummer Al Greenwood told the BBC reporters that somebody opened the door, saying, “does anybody have a white Sprinter van? Because you’re being robbed right now.” The authorities did not take any action even when they contacted them to report the incident. The police only advised them to “fill out an online form” about their robbery.
Most of their electronics, such as film cameras and laptops they use on stage, were targeted by the thief, who smashed the passenger window of their tour van. Greenwood, the tour manager, has lost her journal in the incident, and they’ve also lost all of their passports and documents. The group’s instruments, which were stored separately in a locked compartment at the back of the van, unfortunately, were housed in a separate, locked compartment at the back of the van. Despite the traumatic events of the robbery, the band remain hopeful, and they plan to play their opening show in Sacramento. They are promoting their third album, Boys These Days
