Russian agent 'wanted successful UK operation after Skripal'

The Old Bailey has heard that a Russian agent controlling a spy cell in the United Kingdom stated that a “successful operation on British ground would be amazing” after the failed nerve agent attack on former Russian military intelligence officer Sergei Skripal in Salisbury. The court heard that Orlin Roussev from Great Yarmouth and another man, Biser Dzhambazov from London, have admitted to conspiracy to spy, whereas Katrin Ivanova, Vanya Gaberova, and Tihomir Ivanchev from London, deny the charges. The group had been involved in six operations against individuals and places of interest to the Russian state for almost three years.

The court was told that the alleged spies obtained private flight details regularly. Ms Ivanova was able to sit close enough to Russian investigative journalist Roman Dobrokhotov on a plane to see the pin number for his mobile phone. The jury heard that the group carried out a period of sustained surveillance on investigative journalist Christo Grozev’s property in Vienna with “multiple cameras” and are also accused of following him around a hotel in Valencia, Spain during a conference for his employer Bellingcat.

Jurors were told that the alleged spies were able to work out which flights Mr Grozev would be on with the surveillance teams booked onto the planes. The court was played a video taken by Ms Ivanova on a flight from Vienna to Montenegro using “surveillance video glasses”. The video showed Mr Grozev walking down the aisle and captured Ms Ivanova using her phone to send the video on to Dzhambazov. The court heard that Mr Roussev and another Russian agent, Jan Marsalek, discussed deploying Ms Gaberova as a “honeytrap” on Mr Grozev, after she added him as a friend on Facebook.

The court also heard about an operation involving the surveillance of Bergey Ryskaliyev, a Kazakhstan national and former politician, who was targeted in November 2021 at two central London addresses. One message from Mr Roussev to Mr Marsalek detailed “DHL, Deliveroo, Just Eat, Pizza Express, all different outfits and the Ambulance of course” that could be used to gain entry to a building. The trial continues
