Michelin-starred chef Tommy Banks 'gutted' at theft of 2,500 pies

A van carrying 2,500 pies with a value of £25,000 that were meant for a Christmas market has been stolen, causing a Michelin-starred chef to plead for their return. Tommy Banks, who runs renowned restaurants in North Yorkshire, revealed that nearly a tonne of pies was taken after the van was driven away from Barker Business Park in Melmerby on Sunday night. The refrigerated vehicle had been due to deliver to Banks’s pie stall at York Christmas Market, with no trace of it the following morning. North Yorkshire Police are investigating the theft and urging anyone with information to come forward.

Banks disclosed that the stolen items, which included turkey and cranberry pies, steak, and ale pies, along with butternut squash pies, would have been enough to stock his Pie Shop for a week. He expressed his disappointment in an interview with the BBC, stating that ‘the team is gutted because it’s days and days of work gone…what I’m gutted about especially is, what are they going to do with them, are they going to dump them somewhere? It’s just a real shame”.

Banks added that he hoped the thieves would ‘do the right thing’ and drop the pies off at a community centre to prevent the wasted food from ending up in a landfill. In total, 2,500 people could benefit from the pies, especially since many could use a hot meal right now. Banks put out a video message on social media appealing for the return of the pilfered pies. He also expressed hopes that his business could recover its losses and return to full capacity shortly.

It is unclear who stole the pies at present, but Banks is still holding out hope for their safe return. If you have any information that may assist with this case, the North Yorkshire police urge you to contact them as soon as possible. The thefts are not only damaging to Banks’s business, but they also result in a huge amount of food waste
