Merthyr Tydfil sinkhole residents may not be home for Christmas

The council leader of Merthyr Tydfil has confirmed that a large sinkhole that emerged on Nant Morlais in Pant on Sunday morning is still growing. Over 30 homes have been evacuated due to the void, which Brent Carter estimated to be between 9-12m deep and 16ft wide. In addition, more cracks have emerged, which are spreading across roads, walls, and gardens. He stated that this was due to two landslides in the area and that while the sinkhole emerged due to a collapsed culvert and recent heavy rainfall, repairs will involve stabilising the void, excavating the site, and reinstating the culvert.

Simon Williams, whose family bungalow was affected by the sinkhole, said it could be several months until his neighbours could return home. He added that “it is a shame people have had to leave their homes just before Christmas.” Council workers have arranged alternative accommodation for residents that were unable to stay with their friends or relatives.

John Mitchell, a 76-year-old resident whose home is situated near the edge of the sinkhole, described the frightening experience of coming home to find it barricaded off. Although he could not see the bottom, he estimated the sinkhole to be quite deep.

Andrew Farrant, a BGS geologist, explained that the incident resulted from a “collapsed culvert and recent heavy rainfall”. He added that repairs would involve reinstating the culvert to ensure that the stream can flow safely. The council has praised residents for their cooperation in the evacuation process
