Merthyr Tydfil: Homes evacuated after sinkhole on Pant estate

A housing estate in Pant, Merthyr Tydfil, has been evacuated after a sinkhole appeared thought to have been caused by a collapsed culvert. The hole opened up on Nant Morlais, where around 30 homes were evacuated and the cul-de-sac closed, with people advised to avoid the area. Emergency services arrived on Sunday morning. One resident, Stephen Regan, claimed the hole was 15 to 18 metres deep and feared that he could lose his house.

Last week, heavy rain caused by Storm Bert led to flooding across Wales, with a coal tip landslide and a sinkhole at Cwmtillery, Blaenau Gwent. As a result of the continuing rain, residents are concerned about further sinkholes or landslides. Regan commented: “It was very scary, you could hear it rumbling and collapsing when it was happening. I just want to get back in the house but we don’t know what the situation is at the moment. My fear is my house could go… I’ve never seen anything like this in my life.”

A spokesperson for Merthyr Tydfil council said that staff had been working with Pant agencies and that “no further help or support is needed at this time”. The body advised safety was the priority and suggested people stay away from the area.

Councillor David Hughes confirmed that a culvert collapse is suspected as the cause behind the sinkhole and warned: “We do have culverts under housing estates in and around Pant and this highlights a problem that we could see more of until we take notice of maintenance regimes for these culverts”
