A notorious American fugitive, Daniel Andreas San Diego, was apprehended this week in north Wales. The FBI has been after the 46-year-old for supposedly carrying out two bombings on San Francisco office buildings back in 2003. However, the choice of location for his arrest may surprise many. Why would a US fugitive end up in Wales of all places?
As former undercover detective, Peter Bleksley suggested, one reason could be because Wales is a “stunning and beautiful” place where San Diego could try to blend in. However, experts suggest that the expat community could have played a part in San Diego’s arrest. The area where Daniel Andreas San Diego was apprehended is said to have a North American expat community that he potentially could have sought refuge in. It could be this community, along with help from local authorities, which led to the decision to travel to and hide out in Wales.
According to sources, San Diego was most wanted and the FBI had a $250,000 reward posted for his arrest. Since the bombings in 2003, San Diego had been on the run with six federal charges against him. With the help of the Welsh police and FBI, he was found and detained in what some commentators have described as a hideaway where he had been living undetected.
Despite his reportedly low profile lifestyle, the US authorities have maintained that San Diego’s affiliation with extremist animal rights groups had made him a dangerous individual. During his capture in Wales, statements made by the FBI suggested that his ideology remained the same and he was still promoting and pushing extremist views. San Diego is set to face trial in the coming months for his alleged involvement in the bombings
