Janey Godley begins 'final tour' before funeral


Janey Godley, the Scottish comedian who passed away at the age of 63 on November 2 after battling ovarian cancer, saw hundreds of fans pay tribute to her during her “final tour” through Edinburgh today. Her daughter Ashley Storrie walked behind the hearse carrying Godley, while fans threw roses at the vehicle. The procession will now travel to Glasgow, where the funeral will take place this Saturday at St Mary’s Cathedral in the city.

Godley first revealed that she had ovarian cancer in November 2021, but was given the all-clear in 2022. However, a later scan revealed signs of the disease in her abdomen, and in September she announced that she was receiving end-of-life care after the cancer had spread.

Mourners gathered in Edinburgh to pay their respects to the “amazing woman,” with one attendee commenting on the impact Godley had on people’s lives during the Covid lockdown with her TikTok videos. Fans lauded Godley’s bravery in discussing her cancer diagnosis publicly, especially in her end-of-life interview. The outpouring of love for Godley was particularly moving for those present, with one attendee sharing how “quite emotional” it was to see the turnout.

Born in Glasgow in 1961, Godley initially worked as a pub landlady before moving into the comedy circuit. She gained international attention for a protest against Donald Trump’s 2016 visit to Scotland when she held up a sign with an offensive word describing the then-president. Her voice-overs of First Minister Nicola Sturgeon during the pandemic went viral on social media.
