Fans fume at missing Jason Donovan in Rocky Horror in Blackpool


Theatre-goers in Blackpool were left disappointed on Saturday night when Jason Donovan did not perform in The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Donovan had been advertised to play Frank-N-Furter but instead had the night off. According to audience members, there was no mention of Donovan’s absence in any of the promotional material they had seen while booking for the show. Some attendees had even travelled from London to see the show.

Rumours circulated within the theatre before the show that Donovan would not be performing. Following the show, Laura Johnson from Penwortham expressed her disappointment: “We paid to go and see Jason Donovan. We saw him on the advertisements on social media, which said Monday to Saturday. Why would we then question it? Such a disappointment.”

A spokesperson from Donovan’s management confirmed that he had “never been contracted” to appear at that particular show as he had a prior engagement. A spokesperson for Blackpool’s council-owned theatre pointed out that the event webpage clearly stated from the time of sale that Donovan would not appear during Saturday performances and this information was available to all prospective ticket buyers.

Donovan’s spokesperson added that he has a number of pre-existing contracted commitments in place and that they had been unable to move a couple of them. She explained that Donovan “rarely misses a show unless it is due to severe illness or he has a prior commitment, in which case, the date would be cleared in conjunction with the producers”.
