Up to 1,000 antique coins with a value of over £500,000, dating back to 1136, were stolen from Lord and Lady Stewartby’s home in Broughton near Peebles 17 years ago. Despite previous appeals, the coins have still not been located. To aid in the recovery of the missing coins, an anonymous donor is offering a reward of £50,000 to anyone with information that could lead to their recovery. The Hunterian Museum in Glasgow is hoping the coins can eventually be returned so they can be displayed alongside the rest of Lord Stewartby’s collection.
According to the Hunterian Museum, these coins are incredibly rare and valuable not only to the Stewartby family but the entire Scottish nation. The 12th and 13th Century coins represent Scotland’s earliest independent coinage. It’s unlikely that the coins have turned up on the market as dealers have been informed of the theft since it occurred. Coin collectors would have difficulty selling the stolen pieces safely as potential buyers may notice the theft was announced.
The remaining coins from Lord Stewartby’s collection were donated to the Hunterian Museum in 2017. Despite significant media attention, the coins remain missing. This latest appeal by Crimestoppers Scotland, in tandem with the anonymous donor’s pledge, could very well bring some useful information to light regarding the whereabouts of the coins. The hope is that the coins will be spotted and returned to the Hunterian Museum where they rightfully belong.
Angela Parker, the National Manager of Crimestoppers Scotland, asks the public for any information they might have regarding the theft. She stated that it was undoubtedly an emotionally distressful event for Lord Stewartby and his family. According to his wife, “My late husband was five years old when he was given his first Scottish coin. Over the next 50 years, he put together a collection which included some of the earliest Scottish coins. Lord Stewartby told me and our children that they represented Scotland’s history at a time when few people had access to books or pictures.” Therefore, even though the incident occurred 17 years ago, they are still fighting to recover the stolen coins
