Liz Hatton, a 17-year-old photographer from Harrogate, North Yorkshire, has died after a battle with desmoplastic small round cell tumour, a rare form of cancer. Despite her diagnosis, Liz pursued a photography bucket list and throughout her illness continued to inspire Catherine, Princess of Wales, who was treated for cancer this year, and Prince William. In a personal message, the royal couple praised Liz’s “creativity and strength” and commended her as a “talented young photographer.”
Liz’s mother, Vicky Robayna, announced the teenager’s passing on social media and revealed that Liz had remained optimistic until the end, still making future plans as recently as the day before she died. In paying tribute to her daughter, Ms Robayna described Liz as “the best human and the most wonderful daughter and big sister” and expressed an overwhelming sense of grief; “there is a gaping Liz-shaped hole in our lives that I am not sure how we will ever fill.”
In a statement, Ms Robayna thanked those who helped to make Liz’s last two months “her very best,” and called on the public to share her daughter’s photos and support the family’s mission to fund research into desmoplastic small round cell tumour, which does not have a UK-based charity specialising in the disease.
Through her photography bucket list, Liz achieved things most people can only ever dream of, including photographing circus performers, comedians and models from the Storm Model Agency and the Royal Ballet. She also fulfilled her ambition to capture pictures of the London Air Ambulance from a helipad and to walk the red carpet at the MTV Europe Music Awards. Ranking was one of Liz’s photography heroes, and her dream of working with him came true only a few weeks before her death, when Liz shot a photoshoot with professional models. Model Fifi Anicah praised Liz’s work, describing the pictures she took as “among some of her favourite pictures of all time.”
Liz’s passing will undoubtedly be felt by those who knew and loved her, but her legacy as a talented photographer who was determined to achieve her goals will continue to inspire generations to come.
