Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey in bid for Christmas No 1

After spending the summer journeying to No 10 (Downing Street), Sir Ed Davey, the leader of the Liberal Democrat party, is now setting his sights higher as he seeks a Christmas No 1 hit. In collaboration with the Bath Philharmonia’s Young Carers’ Choir, Sir Ed is releasing the charity single Love is Enough. The song was written by six young carers and former carers, celebrating their bond with the people they care for. The proceeds from the single will support the Carers Trust and the Bath Philharmonia.

The opening line to Love is Enough reads “every second we have left is worth a thousand others”. As a teenager, Sir Ed Davey cared for his mother, who was dying from terminal cancer, and the lyric has a significant impact on him. He explained that he “hoped the song would strike a chord” with carers and their families. The music director of the Bath Philharmonia, Jason Thornton, added that the young carers’ message when creating the single was “Love is everywhere, even when it’s taken for granted. They wanted to remind us all that, no matter who or where you are, there is always someone out there for you.”

Sir Ed Davey becomes the first leader of a major UK political party to release a Christmas single. While the Liberal Democrats have been known for their headline-grabbing antics, such as Sir Ed’s actions during the last election, this Christmas single is their latest attention-catching move. The Bath Philharmonia’s Young Carers’ Choir is responsible for the majority of the song in Love is Enough, with Sir Ed Davey singing in the bridge and the chorus, passing on the lead vocals.

Sir Ed Davey is now facing tough competition to get to the top of the charts, which include the likes of Ed Sheeran, Tom Grennan and the 40th-anniversary version of Band Aid’s Do They Know It’s Christmas. Personalities such as Frank Bruno and Anne Hegarty from The Chase are releasing a cover of All You Need is Love, helping to raise funds for Great Ormond Street Hospital, while Reverend and The Makers are working on Late Night Phone-call to assist the Samaritans. The Official Charts Company now uses a new formula that combines CD and vinyl sales with downloads, streams, and YouTube views. While a song has to be streamed 100 times on a paid-for subscription service to be the same as one download sale, it needs 600 plays for free audio and video streaming
