An agency involved in the arrest of Daniel Andreas San Diego, one of America’s most wanted men, has revealed that he had likely been in North Wales for several years, possibly using a fake identity. San Diego, 46, was arrested on Monday following more than two decades on the run. He had been sought by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in connection with the 2003 bombing of two office buildings in San Francisco, California. North Wales Police located him in a remote location above Maenan in the Conwy valley in Conwy county.
San Diego, who has been described by the FBI as “an animal rights extremist”, became the first person to be added to the agency’s most wanted terrorist list as a domestic terrorist. He had been wanted in connection with explosions at a nutritional products company and two biotech offices on the campus of a biotech firm. San Diego is to be extradited to the US to answer charges related to the bombings.
The FBI had previously offered a reward of $250,000 (£199,000) for information leading to San Diego’s arrest. There had been speculation that he may have been living in Costa Rica, although the FBI had not seen him since he was filmed in downtown San Francisco in 2003. David Johnson, an FBI agent, said in 2013: “He parked his car, got out of his vehicle and started walking down the street and … he went into a Bart [train] station and that was the last time we’ve seen him”.
The FBI has created a most wanted terrorist list, first introduced in 2001 by President George Bush. Twenty-two people were listed, including Osama bin Laden, at that time. The current list has 24 names. The first woman was added in 2013: Joanne Chesimard, a convicted killer who had been a member of the Black Liberation Army, also known as Assata Shakur
