Bay City Rollers: Superfans tell story of Scotland's biggest boyband

Rollers Forever, a new musical featuring the hits of Scotland’s biggest boyband, the Bay City Rollers, is set to debut at Glasgow’s Pavilion Theatre in August 2025. The musical will follow the story of two Bay City Rollers fans, who reunite for a Saturday night and relive their teenage years following their idols. The show will feature the band’s biggest hits, including Bye Bye Baby, Keep On Dancing, Shang-a-Lang and Summer Love Sensation.

The play is written by award-winning playwright Danny McCahon, directed by acclaimed theatre director Liz Carruthers, and features Stuart “Woody” Wood as artistic consultant. Woody joined the band at the age of 17 in 1974, just before their success exploded with the hit Shang-a-lang. He said the great thing about the musical was that it was about the fans, who – like the band – have been around for 50 years. Also involved is current “Roller” John McLaughlin.

The musical sets out to be a celebration of the music and legacy of the “tartan teens” who wore the look once described as “young love personified”. The tartan-clad band was loved by thousands during their prime years, causing scenes of hysteria wherever they went.

One of those real-life tartan teenagers was Gail Shackley from Manchester who fell in love with the band when they were “the boys next door” since they were easily accessible to UK fans. She hopes the musical will be relatable to fans like her and that it will be a great way to relive their past.

Rollers Forever will be a tribute to the fans, and it’s exciting that the Band’s larger-than-life catchy tunes will come to life center stage. The superfan is interested to see how it pan out and hopes it will be cooler to love the band after the musical’s release
