Cornwall developer plans to turn £169k into new cafe

Simon Ayres, a developer based in Cornwall, UK, has purchased a former public toilet block from the local council for £169,000. Despite the fact that the building no longer contains working toilets, Ayres was attracted by its views of St Michael’s Mount and Mounts Bay. He now plans to install a new unisex toilet block, lease the property as a cafe, and build 18 ‘beach pods’ on the adjacent strip of land. Critics argue that this development could be viewed as an “eyesore” to local residents.

Ayres explained that the new beach pods would function like traditional beach huts. The curved roof design is intended to withstand the windy conditions in the area. The beach pods can be rented on a day-to-day basis. Despite the objections received from local people, Ayres has stated that the feedback concerning the project is mostly positive.

Ayres has removed all internal walls and installed large windows, which he plans to create a serving hatch. While the concrete was old and hard, he removed it by himself as it was not possible to bring a vehicle down to the area. Ayres stated that the view was the only reason he bought the toilet block and that it was a wonderful place to work.

The proposed development has attracted complaints from local residents, who believe that the created pods will spoil the natural beauty of the area. However, Ayres has stated that he took the project because he was bored and felt useless after retiring. Ayres also noted that everyone who walked past the building was curious and that 99% of them were positive about the proposed changes
