British Army officer charged after dummy grenade found at airport

Lt Col Hugo Clark, a senior officer in the British Army, has been charged for bringing a decommissioned hand grenade through Edinburgh Airport, the busiest airport in Scotland. On 16 October, the man allegedly took a deactivated explosive through security, only for airport security to find it and call the police. The bomb squad was called to the scene, and the item, a dummy grenade used in training according to reports, was assessed as “non-viable and posed no threat.” Lt Col Clark was released from custody at the time and will appear before a court later.

Police Scotland spokesperson said that they were called to the airport by the security of the airport after a decommissioned ordnance device was found during scanning of a passenger’s hand luggage on 16 October. The spokesperson further confirmed that a 54-year-old man was arrested and charged in connection with the incident and released on an undertaking to appear in court later. The Army refused to comment on the matter, referring it to be an “ongoing legal matter.”

No further information has been provided on the incident at the Edinburgh Airport. The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service were approached for comment but did not provide any further information on the matter. The airport, meanwhile, continues to operate, with no changes to its security protocols
