Due to a “lingering post-viral” chest infection, Queen Camilla was unable to attend the Royal Variety Performance on Friday. Buckingham Palace stated that doctors have advised the 77-year-old queen to prioritize rest as she continues to recover from the infection that caused her to pull out many scheduled events, including Remembrance Sunday. While the queen returned to public duties last week, it is understood that she is still recovering from a busy week of engagements.
Although the Queen was disappointed to miss the annual event at the Royal Albert Hall in London, she is a “great believer that the show must go on,” according to a source at the Palace, who added that she hopes to be back to full strength and regular public duties very soon. The King attended the show as planned.
Friday’s performance was presented by Amanda Holden and Alan Carr and saw Sir Elton John and his husband, David Furnish, present a musical number from their new show, The Devil Wears Prada. The event will be aired on ITV in December.
Other events the Queen attended last week include a reception she hosted at Clarence House for authors shortlisted for this year’s Booker Prize and a Buckingham Palace reception to celebrate the TV and film industry. Both engagements were shorter than originally planned.
The Queen’s chest infection occurred just under a week after returning from a trip to Australia and Samoa with the King, which also included a stopover in India on the way back. Buckingham Palace stated that she had canceled her engagements “with great regret.”
This is not the first time that the Queen has missed official engagements due to health issues. In February 2023, she missed a week of engagements when she tested positive for Covid for the second time. She had previously contracted the virus the year before
