British singer Kate Nash has said she believes she will earn more money from selling pictures of her bottom on OnlyFans than from playing concerts. She is using the profits from the site to subsidise her tours, saying tours more often than not make losses rather than profits. It also brings attention to the difficulties musicians face in the music business. Nash said she was not willing to reduce the quality of her shows nor cut costs, making OnlyFans her funding option of choice.
Nash began her UK dates in Glasgow on Thursday, with her London Koko show already sold out. She used an Instagram post to tell fans not to stream her music, saying “I’m good for the 0.003 of a penny per stream thanks.” Fellow singer, Lily Allen, has previously said that she makes more money selling pictures of her feet on OnlyFans than she does from Spotify streams.
Many artists have canceled concerts in recent months, including Ratboy, Rachel Chinouriri, and The Duke Spirit’s Liela Moss. Nash pointed out a survey from recording studio network Pirate that said most artists have not seen an increase in gig fees in recent years despite a rise in ticket prices. “Festival prices and ticket prices have gone up drastically, but the musicians’ wage hasn’t,” Nash said.
When interviewed, Nash highlighted that sex workers could teach musicians a valuable lesson for taking control of their careers, meaning that they could control what they wanted to do and how they did it, resulting in a paycheck from the public. Artists can take note of sex workers due to the lessons taught regarding control, empowerment and income. Art and music, she said, should hold similar values of being valuable and meaningful within our lives.
