After heavy snowfall across parts of the UK on Thursday, forecasters have issued warnings for Storm Bert’s arrival on the weekend. Over 100 schools in the Scottish Highlands and 30 in North Wales have shut, whilst 200 schools in Devon and Cornwall are partially closed due to snow. Yellow weather warnings for snow and ice have been issued for parts of the UK until Friday, with further warnings for rain and snow on the weekend.
Storm Bert, named by Ireland’s Met Éireann, is set to bring further disruption with gusts of 40-60mph and expected gusts of up to 70mph around Irish Sea coasts. Parts of Wales and southwest England could see over 100mm of rainfall, leading to possible travel disruption and flooding. The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings for rain and snow, and an amber warning of snow and ice in parts of the Highlands, Perth and Kinross and Angus.
The AA has urged motorists to drive with extreme caution and to check forecasts before travelling due to collisions caused by the conditions. A number of train services were cancelled, and bus services were suspended in Inverness. Heavy snow is expected to continue in northern Scotland until Friday morning. Whilst this area of snow, sleet and rain clears from Southern England, wintry showers will also move into North Wales and parts of northwest England.
Wednesday night saw temperatures fall to -10C in Tyndrum, Scotland and -8.7C in Topcliffe, North Yorkshire, making it England’s coldest night of the autumn so far. It was also the coldest night of autumn in Northern Ireland with -3.9C at Katesbridge. A widespread frost and ice on untreated surfaces are expected, leading to the first amber cold weather alert of the season for much of England.
The alert implies an increased health risk to vulnerable people. Cold weather payments are available for those eligible, which is a government benefit to help with fuel bills during periods of exceptionally cold weather. To claim, recipients must be receiving certain benefits and meet additional eligibility criteria, with the average temperature in the area at 0°C or less for seven days in a row or forecast to be so. People in England and Wales can check whether they are eligible via the government website, whilst those in Scotland can check their eligibility on the Mygov website, and those in Northern Ireland can use the checker on the NI Direct website
