An 18-year-old British citizen is facing up to 20 years behind bars in Dubai after allegedly engaging in a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old British girl during their holiday in the emirate. Marcus Fakana of North London is currently staying in a rented accommodation in Dubai while awaiting trial, according to human rights campaigner, Radha Stirling, founder and chief executive of campaign group, Detained in Dubai. The UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) confirmed that it is supporting a British man in the UAE and is in contact with his family.
According to Ms. Stirling, Mr. Fakana was in Dubai with his family when he began a secretive romantic liaison in September with another Londoner who has since turned 18. The girl’s mother reported the relationship to Dubai police after seeing pictures and chats. The police then arrested Mr. Fakana at his hotel. Ms. Stirling added that the young man and his parents, who work as a cleaner and in a warehouse, are in turmoil over the incident.
Ms. Stirling argued that they are not discussing any abuse or the taking advantage of anyone in this case. They are purely two older teenagers of the same age who have been trapped because a mother reported the behaviour, she said. Ms. Stirling also called attention to the fact that westerners are specifically targeted by UAE for tourism and marketing, offered cheap flights, and expensive PR agents without being warned of the consequences they may face by traveling to the emirate.
The FCDO website guidance states that consensual sexual relationships between an adult male and adult female outside marriage are generally legal as long as both people are above the age of 18. Extra-marital relationships are also covered under this category. However, if a person who is 18 or above is found to have a sexual relationship with a person under 18 years old, they will be prosecuted for having a relationship with a minor
