Skulls of Jigsaw Murders victims found in Edinburgh University archive


The University of Edinburgh is searching for the families of two women who were murdered 90 years ago in the Jigsaw Murders, after discovering their skulls and other bones in the archives. The remains of Isabella Ruxton and Mary Rogerson were found in a ravine in 1935. The case was a significant development in forensic science, leading to the first use of superimposed images in court and new fingerprint scanning technologies. Dr Buck Ruxton, who had experience of surgery, was convicted for the murder of his wife following the identification of the remains.

Edinburgh University has decided to use the BBC to issue a public appeal for the families of Isabella and Mary, rather than contacting them privately. This is because it is not clear whether Isabella and Buck Ruxton’s three young children were aware of the execution of their father for murdering their mother.
