Russia's nuclear rhetoric won't dent UK support for Ukraine – PM

The UK’s Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has vowed that Russia’s recent “irresponsible rhetoric” surrounding nuclear weapons would not undermine the British government’s support for Ukraine. Ukraine had recently, for the first time, launched US-provided missiles at Russian territory, following permission from the White House to do so. This move had come as Russian President Putin approved changes to the country’s nuclear doctrine on Tuesday, which outlined conditions under which the country would consider using its arsenal. The new doctrine ramped up fears by outlining that it would consider strikes from non-nuclear states backed by a nuclear state (like the US) as a joint attack on Russia.

Starmer, speaking during the G20 summit, aimed to reassure Ukraine by stating that the UK would continue to provide it with the support it required. It was noted that the UK had supplied Ukraine with Storm Shadow missiles and other defence products, however, no further details were provided as to how these products have been used by Ukraine.

Commenting on Putin’s absence from the G20 summit, Starmer noted that Putin was “the author of his own exile”. This absence marked the third successive year that Putin had declined to attend the summit of the world’s largest economies. Despite the ongoing situation in Ukraine, the Labour leader emphasised the need for the UK to continue to provide global leadership at a time when many global challenges were affecting the UK domestically.

Referring to the 1,000-day long conflict in Ukraine, Starmer stated that the UK would continue to ensure that Ukraine was provided with what it needed for as long as it took. This came following reports that the UK supported Ukraine’s missile strike. There were concerns that the situation would lead to further escalation in the region if an agreement could not be reached
