The Metropolitan Police are facing yet another scandal involving two officers who have been charged with four counts of sexual assault against a woman in London. PCs Jerome Beasley, 41, and Luke Robinson, 39, of the Central West Command Unit, are alleged to have sexually assaulted the victim while off duty on April 21st at an unspecified location in central London. The officers have been suspended from duty and are due to appear before Westminster Magistrates’ Court this week, according to a police statement.
The Met Police have been heavily criticised in recent years over a series of ‘black marks’ against its officers, from institutional racism and the handling of former staff’s gender discrimination claims, to officers themselves facing convictions for serious offences such as corrupt practices, sexual misconduct, and participation in a murder plot. The latest in a long line of scandals will do little to repair the force’s damaged reputation or inspire confidence in the public.
The Directorate of Professional Standards department has been notified of the case. While the Met Police have committed themselves to transparency and openness, this latest incident will inevitably raise questions around how the force selects, trains and disciplines its officers. As they attempt to regain public trust and restore the reputation of the force, any revelations of further misconduct will only damage their efforts.
Cases such as this also underline the need for better accountability and transparency in police forces across the country. While many will have concerns over how seriously such a high-profile incident is being taken by the Met Police, it is hoped that the full weight of the law will be used to bring the guilty parties to justice and ensure that incidents like these never happen again
