Wynne Evans has expressed disappointment over the media coverage he received during his appearance on Strictly Come Dancing 2021. The Welsh BBC Radio Wales presenter and opera singer became the eighth star to leave the show after his Charleston failed to impress the judges in a dance-off at Blackpool Tower Ballroom on Sunday.
Evans had been caught up in controversy with dance partner Katya Jones earlier in the series after what they labelled a “running joke” failed. TheĀ 52-year-old Welshman, who became famous from insurance adverts, says he’s still amazed that people are allowed to write any untruths that they want about him. Evans also revealed he’s struggled with mental health issues and thanked three-time champion Jones for supporting him throughout their partnership.
Strictly Come Dancing has put in place heightened welfare measures including chaperones in rehearsals, and celebrities have been vocal about their treatment. The remaining seven couples will take to the dance floor next week.
Evans believes he is now a stronger person, admitting that Jones taught him a lot about being in the limelight. He praises the Strictly family for being perfect in every way but disagrees with how the press treats them. The opera singer and Jones apologised after their “running joke” was poorly received. Jones declined to high five Evans and later moved his hand from her waist, which viewers interpreted as awkward.
