Formula 1: McLaren's Welsh teen hopes to inspire other women


Nineteen-year-old Ella Lloyd is set to join McLaren for their 2025 F1 Academy season. With four podium finishes in her last F4 season, Ella has already competed in races across the world. The upcoming Netflix series, produced by Reese Witherspoon’s company Hello Sunshine, will follow some of Ella’s peers in their races and personal lives. Despite being called into F1, Ella only learnt to drive two years ago.

In representing McLaren, Ella commends the team for its focus on getting more women involved in motorsports, and F1 in particular. She notes that there isn’t an adequate number of women currently in high-level F1, and the sport must change. She hopes the new full female grid will inspire more women to take up motorsport work as engineers and behind the scenes. 

Despite her successes, Ella still faces apprehension from male drivers within the sport over women’s role within F1. However, she firmly believes that it is who wins on the track at the end of the day, no matter whether male or female. She doesn’t allow the pressure to get to her and approaches her ambition to race in F1 one moment at a time.

Notably, Ella and her family have very reassuring and supportive relationships towards each other, with her mother Jessica Lloyd often plaiting her hair for races. Additionally, her father Chris Lloyd has always encouraged her sporting ambitions despite being a paraplegic skier, who was injured in a rally car accident in 2011.
