The Scottish National Party (SNP) has suggested a reduction in the number of staff in its headquarters by over a third. The current headcount of 26 will be cut to 16 under the proposed measures, which were approved following a meeting of the party’s national executive committee (NEC) on Saturday. A voluntary redundancy plan has already been rolled out. National Secretary councillor Alex Kerr said that this move would help the party protect its long-term finances.
The SNP is shifting its focus to the forthcoming Holyrood election in 2026. It has been in power in Scotland since 2007. The party is being challenged by a resurgent Labour Party, which more than tripled its Scottish seats, rising from one to 37, in the last general election. According to Mr Kerr, this reduction in staff numbers at headquarters would prepare the party broadly for elections and in its fight for independence.
He also said that not everyone currently employed at HQ would continue, but a streamlined workforce would help the party deliver a modern, professional, and victorious organization that Scotland requires. As he expressed his deep gratitude to the party staff and supporters, he stressed that the SNP’s success had come from the commitment of many people, not just those employed at his headquarters or elected officials.
The SNP is experiencing declining membership numbers, particularly when compared to the surge that followed the 2014 independence referendum. The decline in members has caused a decline in income from membership fees, which made up 81% of the party’s funding this year, compared to 35% in 2015, when the former First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, led the party to 56 seats in the general election.
