Edinburgh’s famous Royal Mile has been hit by a rash of shoplifting and smash-and-grab raids, with thieves making off with thousands of pounds of high-end goods over recent months. Traders in the area have described the situation as “lawless” and CCTV footage has captured a man kicking in a window at night before stealing armfuls of Harris Tweed bags worth up to £150 each.
The area is a popular tourist destination but the increasing criminal activity has left staff feeling anxious and unsafe, with many reporting thefts to the police on a daily basis. Thieves have been caught on camera walking out of stores with cashmere scarves, jumpers and jackets in broad daylight.
Despite the concerns raised by traders, a police spokesperson has confirmed that a dedicated team is working with local businesses to investigate each and every report of theft. The traders are, however, keen to see more action taken to stop the crime wave and to make the area a safer place to be for both staff and tourists.
In the meantime, the CCTV footage serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by theft, not only to traders’ livelihoods but also to the city’s reputation. Despite its beauty and cultural heritage, Edinburgh cannot afford to be seen as a soft touch for criminals, and it is hoped that swift action will be taken to ensure the city remains a welcoming and safe place to visit
