DJ AG is bringing energy to the UK rap scene with his street sets, which have been attracting crowds and racking up millions of views on social media platforms, including TikTok. Starting as a platform to showcase new artists, big names like Skepta and Lethal Bizzle have also been getting involved. DJ AG tells the BBC that his approach is unplanned and that he just shows up with his decks and sees what happens. The lack of opportunities for emerging artists in the current music industry is one reason why DJ AG puts on his sets.
Rapper Louis Massey and his manager Kaianne Lewis Sapong have praised street sets for offering opportunities for emerging artists and for being a platform to showcase alternative music. They feel that the innovative and organic nature of the street sets is missing from the current UK rap music scene, which can feel repetitive at times. Grime MC D Double E agrees that such sets can provide a platform for original sound and bring more originality to the music industry, which he believes sometime feels “a bit robotic.”
1Xtra’s DJ Target, another grime pioneer, also believes it’s good to get back to the raw and self-sufficient style of UK rap and grime music that characterized the early days of the genre. According to Target, artists are now enjoying “that early essence” of UK rap and people are rebelling against the record labels. The live moments and direct-from-the-street approach of street sets can bring raw talent and creativity to the forefront by providing a platform for emerging artists to showcase their skills.
DJ AG believes that the street sets have shaken up the UK music industry and given the emerging artists an opportunity to showcase their music in an organic way. As the popularity of these sets increases, more and more artists are getting involved, and it may just be a matter of time before some of the new stars of UK rap music emerge from these street sets
