The 'chip shop diva' who became a TikTok star


Destiny Harold, also known as the “chip shop diva,” has become a viral TikTok sensation thanks to her colleague and friend, Mitch Key. Key, who has been filming Harold’s antics at Merchants fish and chip shop in Bewdley, Worcestershire, has helped the eatery achieve five-star reviews and plenty of recognition on social media from millions of new customers.

Harold, who only works at the chippy for two days a week while studying to become a nurse, is thrilled with her newfound celebrity status, with customers coming in just to take photos with her. Merchants has now become an institution on the video sharing site with its most watched video having 25 million views.

Owner Antony Akathiotis is concerned for Harold’s safety due to the negative aspects that social media platforms can have. “Destiny and Mitch work really well together, but social media can be a scary business,” he told the Dudley News. “It does worry me, and we want to make sure we are protecting Destiny.”

Key admits that the work is very much a collaborative effort and shares that the project’s primary aim was initially “to get the staff involved and show that human, real, raw aspect of the business,” before becoming the unexpected viral sensation it is today.

The videos have since spawned numerous musical tributes, with one of them reworked into a dance track, a testament to Harold’s ability to attract followers worldwide. The Binley Mega Chippy in Coventry also found global fame thanks to a fan who created a TikTok jingle.

With Merchants’ overwhelming success, it is clear that its online presence has become an integral part of its business, something that Harold and her colleague, Mitch Key, will continue to maintain and sustain
