Shock as Rutland man told 'there's a cow in your pool'

A man in Ketton, Rutland, was surprised to find an “unexpected visitor” in his swimming pool on Monday: a pregnant cow. Farmers informed the property owner, Ian Blackburn, and the local fire department was dispatched to rescue her. According to the farmer, the heifer, who had “checked herself in for a spa day,” was in good health and has since been returned home.

Blackburn, who was on the phone with a friend when he received the news, stated that “a normal Monday took a drastic turn” after discovering the cow in his backyard. Firefighters spent several hours draining the pool and lifting the cow out with a harness. Afterward, a vet examined her and her unborn calf before releasing her back onto the farm.

It’s not uncommon for animals to wander off from their pastures, but it is rare for them to experience such an adventure. In 2018, a cow visiting Poland’s Tatra Mountains was rescued by Polish firefighters after spending a cold winter trapped in a cave. Another cow destined for a dairy farm escaped onto a nearby island in New Zealand and was rescued after being found months after she vanished.

Although such incidents are rare, it’s heartwarming to see how people come together to ensure the safety and well-being of the animals that make up our world
