contacted me to say they were applying for a warrant to search the suspect’s home and seize his phone.
The officer was convinced the suspect was lying and still felt there was a chance to bring charges.
A few days later, the warrant was successful and the suspect’s phone was taken.
They found a text message to someone saying: “I made a joke phone call to this woman.” It was clearly about me.
Finally, they had the evidence to charge him. The officer called to tell me they were taking him to court.
It was an extraordinary relief. But at the same time – it’s just wrong that it took so long for the police to act and for the law to take its course.
It was a small crime – but even so, it took six months of my life. For some victims, that might not seem long – but it is. It’s time that could be spent healing or moving on.
I hope the new changes being proposed give victims a greater sense that the system is there for them and that justice can be done.
