24-year-old Bath funeral director trying to change “perceptions”


Hollie James, a 24-year-old funeral director, is surprising clients with her young age. She recently founded her own company, based in Radstock near Bath. This makes her the youngest independent funeral director in Somerset. James has a personal motivation, as she lost her mother when she was 15. She told BBC Radio Somerset that organising a funeral was a blur at the time, which is why she now feels privileged to support people in their time of need.

James began her career as an apprentice at a crematorium in Bath when she was 18. She did not get the GCSE grades she wanted, so her grandparents suggested she go for an apprenticeship. She recalls being nervous about her first funerals and went through heart palpitations, but it has now become second nature to her. Even if every funeral is different, everything has to be perfect because you don’t get a trial run.

While an apprentice, James built up contacts by meeting funeral directors throughout Somerset. Now she runs her own business. Although it was a daunting task for James to move from an established company to start her own one, she says that it’s going well. Her company aims to “hold people’s hands through the journey” because funerals are usually quite personal for everyone.

James wants to change the taboo around death and funerals, and make it easier to talk about. She said that “everyone has said that it’s really refreshing that young people are coming into the industry. It’s a changing industry.” She is breaking barriers by showing that age does not determine success
