Zombie knives still for sale online after ban, BBC finds

Online retailers in the UK are continuing to sell banned zombie knives and machetes, according to an investigation by BBC News. In September, England and Wales banned the purchase, sale, and possession of zombie-style knives and machetes, which include weapons with serrated edges, spikes, or more than two sharp points. BBC News found that four such knives could easily be purchased for under £60, with two being shipped in from overseas. Online shops Hunting&Knives, HuntingCrossbows, and NineFit UK all sold the weapons to the BBC team.

Unpacking the knives was found to be the easiest part of the process, with delivery personnel not requesting signatures. Will we have to change the law again, quite possibly,” commented Commander Stephen Clayman, the NPCC’s lead for knife crime. The Home Office has announced a “rapid review” into the sale of knives online, after being presented with the results of the investigation.

The ONS indicates that more than 50,000 incidents of knife crime were recorded in England and Wales in 2019, an increase of 4% over the previous year. The government has set a target of reducing knife crime by 50% by 2034 with measures like the new ban. However, since the ban came into force, BBC News revealed that the knives continue to make their way into the hands of criminal gangs, possibly aided by online retailers
