The UK Ministry of Defence has reported that two RAF Typhoons were dispatched after a Russian military aircraft was detected in the UK’s “area of interest” in close proximity to the nation’s airspace. The Russian Bear-F bomber was monitored as it flew over the North Sea on Thursday, though at no time was it able to enter the UK’s sovereign airspace, the Ministry of Defence said. RAF crews are regularly dispatched to shadow Russian military aircraft near UK airspace, and the incident is known as a quick reaction alert.
This marks the second time in three months that RAF and Royal Navy forces have detected both Russian ships and aircraft within a week of one another. Over the past week, the Royal Navy shadowed three Russian vessels that were led by the new frigate Admiral Golovko. The vessel was accompanied by the oceanographic research vessel Yantar and support tanker Vyazma. The three were tracked by the Norwegian Navy before British forces became involved. HMS Iron Duke and tanker RFA Tideforce kept contact with the pair as they passed through the Channel and into the North Sea, before handing over to a Dutch warship.
Armed Forces Minister Luke Pollard commented on the recent developments, stating that “our adversaries should be in no doubt of our steadfast determination and formidable ability to protect the UK […]. The Royal Navy and RAF have once again shown they stand ready to defend our country at a moment’s notice and I pay tribute to the professionalism and bravery of those involved in these latest operations.”
These incidents highlight the ongoing tensions between the UK and Russia, particularly with regards to military presence near national borders. While neither side has initiated direct conflict, it’s clear that both nations are closely monitoring the movements of the other. The UK’s ability to dispatch quick reaction alerts is important in maintaining a safe airspace and protecting national security
