A 19-year-old man has been sentenced to five and a half years in jail after deliberately knocking a Metropolitan Police officer off his motorcycle, leaving him with life-changing injuries. David Doyle, who was being pursued by PC Richard Keel on Camden Street in north London on 17 May, reversed into the officer before fleeing the scene in the stolen vehicle he was driving. Doyle, from Northolt, north-west London, pleaded guilty in August to causing grievous bodily harm with intent and multiple driving offences. He was also disqualified from driving for 81 months at his sentencing on Thursday.
PC Keel, who is on a challenging journey to recovery, said: “Although I’m pleased that Doyle has been brought to justice for the attack, this incident is a reminder of the dangers we face as we strive to keep communities and Londoners safe.”
The incident highlighted the risk that police face while responding to incidents and came as a spate of attacks on officers led to calls for tougher sentencing, including a life sentence for anyone who kills emergency service workers. In July, Prime Minister Theresa May launched a consultation on changing the law to double the maximum sentence for assaulting an emergency worker from six to 12 months.
Ministers have highlighted the aggression that police and ambulance workers face, as well as the escalation of assaults on firefighters. There has been no official data released for 2018/19, however, there was a 70% increase in the number of assaults where the victim reported an injury between 2010 and 2016
