Gary Lineker: It is 'right time' to leave Match of the Day

Gary Lineker has announced he will step down from hosting Match of the Day at the end of the current football season. Lineker revealed he thinks “it is now the right time” for the BBC to look for a different person to helm the show. After 25 years, the former England striker will be moving on from the programme that brings fans highlights and analysis of Premier League football each week.

Lineker said he always knew his time on the show would have to come to an end. He also said he has been thinking about leaving for several years, citing next season’s changes to how the show will be produced as a natural cut-off point. The BBC has not yet announced his successor.

However, Lineker will still remain part of the BBC TV sports team. He will front coverage of next season’s FA Cup and the 2026 men’s World Cup, after signing an extra year to his current contract. The former footballer has thanked people for their supportive messages since the announcement and has admitted he may get emotional towards the end of his time with the broadcaster.

Lineker advised his replacement to “be yourself” and enjoy hosting one of the “most wonderful programmes” ever made. Lineker suggested to his successor to soak in the experience, which is not only brilliant but also incredibly fortunate, whilst he looks forward to going out for dinner and maybe getting to bed earlier on a Saturday night
